Lye is a caustic substance that is used to make soap. It is made from either sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda) or potassium hydroxide (also known as caustic potash). Lye is a necessary ingredient in soapmaking, as it chemically reacts with the oils in your recipe to create soap. However, lye is also a very dangerous substance if used improperly.

When working with lye, it is important to always wear protective gear, including gloves, goggles, and a long-sleeved shirt. Lye can cause severe burns if it comes into contact with your skin, so it is important to take all necessary precautions.

Lye is also a very caustic substance, so it is important to use it in well-ventilated areas. If you are working with lye indoors, make sure to open all the windows and turn on any fans or air purifiers that you have.

When working with lye, always add the lye to the water, never the water to the lye. This is important because adding water to lye can cause a dangerous chemical reaction that can result in burns or explosions.

Once you have added the lye to the water, stir it gently until it is completely dissolved. Then, you can add the lye solution to your soapmaking recipe.

Now that you know all about lye, you can feel confident using it in your soapmaking recipes. Just remember to always take precautions when working with this dangerous substance, and you will be able to create beautiful, handmade soap safely and easily.
