Drawing: Buyer's Guides

There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for drawing supplies. The type of paper you use will depend on the medium you're working with and the desired effect. For instance, watercolor paper is thicker than normal sketchbook paper to prevent warping when wet media is applied. Bristol board is smooth and ideal for detailed work in pen or pencil.

When it comes to pencils, harder lead produces lighter lines while softer lead creates darker, more saturated marks. A set of varying hardness levels is a good way to start out. Charcoal and conte crayons are great for sketching and blending, while pastels come in both dry and oil varieties.

Paintbrushes come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny round sable brushes to large flat ones. Synthetic or natural bristles each have their own benefits, so it's worth trying out a few to see what you prefer. Palettes are essential for mixing colors, while easels and portfolios provide a convenient way to transport your supplies.
